On 23 August 1966, NASA's Lunar Orbiter 1 captured the first photograph of Earth from lunar orbit, a spontaneous decision that resulted in an iconic image. Launched on 10 August 1966, its mission was to photograph lunar landing sites. The image, taken from 380,000 km, showed half of Earth and had lasting emotional and scientific impact.
