Japan's newborn numbers have dropped to a record low of 686,061 in 2024, marking a 5.7% decrease from the previous year and the first time births fell below 700,000 since 1899. This decline, ongoing for 16 years, raises concerns about economic sustainability and national security. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has labeled it a 'silent emergency' and aims to improve work-life balance for families. The fertility rate has also decreased to 1.15, while societal pressures and economic challenges deter young people from marrying and having children. Teljes cikk (Euronews.com)
