An underwater archaeologist, Alexandre Monteiro, has identified 8,620 shipwrecks in Portuguese waters, with about 250 believed to contain lost treasures. His research, based on a database of wrecks dating back to the 1500s, reveals that many wrecks are located along the mainland coast, the Azores, and Madeira.
