Al-Sharaa mentioned the historical connection between Syria and Russia, noting that much of Syria's infrastructure was built and maintained by Russians. A Syrian official in Damascus indicated that al-Sharaa would request the extradition of Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia, to hold him accountable for war crimes.
