The European Union aims to decarbonise heavy industry through carbon capture and storage (CCS), targeting 50 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030 and 280 million tonnes by 2040. However, only five CCS projects currently operate in Europe, capturing 2.7 million tonnes annually. The strategy requires significant infrastructure investment, estimated at €140 billion by 2050, but faces challenges such as high costs, technical issues, and local opposition. Critics argue that reliance on CCS may distract from other effective climate actions. Teljes cikk (Euronews.com)
