The European Commission has withdrawn proposals for an AI Liability Directive and a Regulation on Standard Essential Patents (SEP) due to a lack of foreseeable agreement, despite some resistance from lawmakers. The AI Liability rules aimed to provide consumers with a means of redress for harm from AI products, but progress has stalled since their proposal in 2022. The SEP regulation was further along but also faced withdrawal, with hopes for broader agreement. The Commission is focusing on simplification and will continue to monitor developments in the market.
