The European Commission has cautioned EU member states and the European Parliament against incorporating elements of the Digital Services Act (DSA) into other laws, as it complicates enforcement and allows Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) to exploit loopholes. Currently, there are 24 national laws referencing the DSA. The DSA, effective since August 2024, aims to protect users online and requires platforms to manage systemic risks. Finland’s Henna Virkkunen will oversee its implementation, with new rules expected on advertising and online protection for minors. The Commission has initiated investigations into non-compliance by several platforms and notified multiple countries for failing to appoint national authorities for DSA oversight.
