Despite thousands of medical graduates in Europe, healthcare workforce shortages persist, with significant variations across countries. While some nations like Türkiye, Germany, and Italy produce many doctors, others like Montenegro and Iceland have very few. Migration of healthcare workers is a concern, but Romania has seen a reduction in doctor migration due to improved conditions. The WHO projects a shortage of 950,000 health workers by 2030, particularly in general practice. The ageing workforce adds to the challenge, with many doctors nearing retirement.
