France plans to build a high-security prison in the Amazon to combat serious drug offenders, announced by Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin during a visit to French Guiana. The 500-bed prison in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni will house high-level drug criminals and terrorists, with a courthouse also planned.
