The summer of 2024 was the warmest on record in Europe, with significant regional variations. While parts of northwest Europe, including Iceland and Ireland, experienced cooler temperatures, southeastern Europe faced extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 40C in Italy and Turkey. Overall, temperatures were 1.54C higher than the 1991-2020 average, surpassing the previous record set in 2022. Heat stress affected the wellbeing of citizens, particularly in southeastern Europe, which recorded 66 days of strong heat stress.
