New research indicates that middle-aged individuals with signs of heart damage, specifically elevated cardiac troponin I levels, are at a higher risk of developing dementia. This risk can manifest up to 25 years before a dementia diagnosis, even in those without heart disease symptoms. The study involved nearly 6,000 participants in the UK, revealing that those with higher troponin levels were significantly more likely to experience cognitive decline and dementia.
