Card payments are increasingly popular in Europe, making up 57% of non-cash payments in 2025. However, the EU is highly dependent on foreign payment systems, particularly Visa and Mastercard, which dominate the eurozone market. This dependency hampers Europe's competitiveness and raises concerns about financial isolation, especially in light of deteriorating EU-US relations.
