Afghanistan is constructing the Qosh Tepa Canal to irrigate its northern regions, redirecting 20-30% of the Amu Darya River flow. This will severely impact water security in Central Asia, reducing Uzbekistan's water supply by 15% and Turkmenistan's by up to 80%. Experts warn this could lead to increased water extraction from the Syr Darya River, further harming the region's ecosystems, including the Aral Sea. While Afghanistan seeks cooperation on water sharing, it is not part of existing transboundary agreements. Central Asian countries are gradually improving relations with the Taliban regime.
