Richard Takác, the Slovak Minister of Agriculture, sharply criticized the European Commission's agricultural support proposals for the 2028-2034 budget period, claiming they threaten to 'liquidate' Slovak agriculture by reducing support by nearly one billion euros compared to the current 4.6 billion euro framework. He emphasized that this drastic cut would make the entire sector unsustainable in Slovakia, while other parts of Europe might cope. Takác also pointed out that the Commission previously promised to create a special fund to assist countries like Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland against Ukrainian imports, but the new proposal only supports states bordering Russia and Belarus. He stated that this shift is completely unacceptable and highlighted the ongoing inequalities in support levels for Slovakia, despite being an EU member for over twenty years. The debate not only affects Slovakia's agricultural future but also reflects broader tensions within the EU regarding support disparities between old and new member states, exacerbated by the Ukrainian import situation and the Russian-Ukrainian war.
