The head of the UN refugee agency in Lebanon stated that the US decision to lift sanctions on Syria may encourage more refugees to return home. The Caesar Act sanctions, imposed in 2019, were temporarily lifted by President Trump, and the Senate voted for a permanent repeal. While around 400,000 refugees have returned since the fall of al-Assad, many face challenges such as destroyed homes and lack of job opportunities. The World Bank estimates $216 billion is needed for reconstruction, and the lifting of sanctions could attract investment.
