On June 26, 2025, a court in Vicenza, Italy, sentenced 11 former Miteni executives to 141 years in prison for polluting an aquifer with PFAS. Miteni, which went bankrupt in 2018, had been aware of the pollution since the 1990s. PFAS are man-made chemicals used in various products but are harmful to health and the environment. The World Health Organization has classified some PFAS as carcinogenic. Exposure can occur through contaminated water, food, and consumer products.
