A new analysis reveals that over 281,000 deaths among children under five in lower-income countries could have been prevented in one year if cigarette taxes were raised to 75% of retail prices. The World Health Organization recommends this tax rate to reduce smoking rates and protect children's health. The study indicates that higher taxes would particularly benefit lower-income families, potentially averting nearly 70,000 deaths in the poorest households. However, experts caution that while raising taxes can help, it is not a comprehensive solution to child mortality, which is also affected by other factors like infectious diseases.
