Marcel Ciolacu, the Romanian Prime Minister and leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), received only 19.15% of the votes in the first round of the presidential election and resigned from his party leadership. He takes responsibility for the poor results and will remain in office until the new parliamentary majority is formed. The election was won by Calin Georgescu with 22.94%, followed by Elena Lasconi with 19.18%.
