MEPs voted to exempt over 90% of SMEs from the EU's carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), simplifying sustainability laws. The CBAM, which taxes imports based on carbon footprint, will require importers to report emissions by 2026. The exemption benefits around 182,000 businesses, mainly SMEs, and aims to prevent carbon leakage. The simplification law awaits approval from EU countries, while further reviews of the CBAM are anticipated by the end of the year, amid concerns about potential changes due to US pressure.
