Spain has rejected a NATO proposal to spend 5% of its GDP on defense, calling it 'unreasonable.' Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Spain cannot commit to this target at the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague, risking a derailment of the meeting. While most US allies are on track to meet the 5% target, Sánchez emphasized that such spending would be incompatible with Spain's welfare state and would require cuts to public services. Spain plans to spend 2.1% of GDP on defense needs instead. Domestic corruption scandals are increasing pressure on Sánchez, and increased military spending is unpopular among some coalition partners.
