German archaeologists from Heidelberg University discovered a monumental relief in Nineveh, Iraq, depicting King Assurbanipal with deities. The relief, measuring 5.5 by 3 meters and weighing twelve tonnes, is significant for its size and the representation of deities. It was found in the North Palace's throne room and likely dates back to Hellenistic times. The fragments were buried, possibly explaining why they were missed by British archaeologists over a century ago. Future excavations aim to clarify the historical context of the relief.
