Sweden has reached an agreement with Estonia to rent up to 600 prison cells to alleviate overcrowding in its prisons. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer confirmed the deal, allowing Sweden to rent 400 cells in Tartu, Estonia. The cost of housing inmates in Estonia is lower than in Sweden. The agreement includes provisions for Swedish staff to train Estonian guards and assess inmates on a case-by-case basis for transfer, focusing on serious offenders.
