This shift is attributed to the expansion of LNG facilities in various EU countries following the Ukraine invasion. Despite its flexibility, LNG has a higher carbon footprint compared to pipeline gas. The EU is diversifying its gas sources, reducing reliance on Russian imports, and plans to stop all Russian energy imports by 2027.
