Researchers in Portugal have identified the first cases of the superbug 'Candida auris', an invasive yeast that can cause deadly infections, particularly in patients with weakened immune systems. Detected in a northern hospital in 2023, three patients died, but deaths were linked to severe underlying conditions. The fungus is resistant to drugs and poses a global health threat, necessitating increased hospital vigilance. It has infected over 7,000 people in the US and is present in around 60 countries.
