Excavation of a former church-run home for unmarried women and their children in Tuam, Ireland, has begun to recover the remains of around 800 infants who died there. This effort is part of Ireland's reckoning with the legacy of abuse in church institutions. The home, operated by Catholic nuns until 1961, housed women who were shunned by society. A major inquiry revealed that about 9,000 children died in similar institutions. The Bon Secours Sisters have issued an apology for their failures. The excavation is expected to take two years.
