A new analysis published in BMJ Oncology reveals that cancer patients who are lonely or socially isolated face a higher risk of dying from cancer and other causes. The Canadian research team analyzed data from 16 studies involving over 1.6 million cancer patients across multiple countries. Loneliness and social isolation are linked to a 34% increased risk of death from any cause and an 11% increased risk from cancer. The findings suggest that loneliness may negatively impact cancer outcomes beyond biological factors. The study highlights the need for improved mental health support for cancer patients.
